Romanian laureates at the US Seismic Design Competition

A student team from the Technical University of Cluj won the Grand Award of Seismic Design Competition organised by the US Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI). The contest was attended by 28 teams, representing as many universities from all over the world. The Romanian team designed and built of balsa wood, 1:72 scale model of a 29-storey building called Valahia Tower, with friction dampers for dissipating the seismic energy. The model was put to several kinds of vibration tests (on three accelerograms that simulated earthquakes) and its behaviour was evaluated in terms of research and design. After the theory presentation and model testing, the Romanian team received the ‘Egor Popov’ Award for structural innovation. The 1st, second and 3rd places went to the teams of Oregon State University, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, the Richter Award for competition spirit went to the California Davis University, and the ‘Fazlur Khan’ Award for architectural design went to the San Jose State University. EERI hosts each year the Seismic Design Competition (SDC), aimed at promoting the seismic engineering research among students and graduates.
