The mayor of Targu Secuiesc, Covasna County, Racz Karoly, was remanded for 29 days on charges of taking bribes, according to Mediafax. The mayor said he would appeal the ruling. Prosecutors charge that the Targu Secuiesc official demanded and received money from a company manager to support that firm obtain a contract with the mayor’s office. Racz Karoly was detained on Friday while receiving RON 10,000 from the company manager who had filed the complaint against him with anticorruption prosecutors. One of the mayor’s lawyers, Sorin Vidican, said the money was not bribes, but a loan. Following the arrest, the Hungarian Civic Party in which Racz Karoly is a member announced that it was cancelling the congress scheduled to take place in Targu Secuiesc on Monday and Hungarian Revolution Day events on Tuesday, in solidarity with the mayor.
