Ana Maria Brinza won the Women’s Epee World Cup stage in Barcelona. Simona Alexandru finished on 3rd place. The Romanian fencers that won gold in the World Cup teams’ event last year took part in the Women’s Epee World Cup in Barcelona at the end of last week, winning two medals.
The Romanians made up for the competition that took place in Budapest two weeks ago, one in which they failed to obtain any notable results. Ana Maria Brinza won the singles event, while Romania’s Simona Alexandru and China’s Yujie Sun finished on third place. Yana Shemyakina won silver. Brinza, Olympic runner-up in 2008, defeated China’s Anqi Xu in the quarterfinals, score 9-8, her teammate Simona Alexandru in the semifinals, score 15-11 and Ukraine’s Shemyakina in the final, score 15-13. Two other Romanians finished among the top 10 fencers. Loredana Iordachioiu finished on 8th place, while Anca Maroiu was 10th. The four Romanian fencers tried to win the teams’ event but finished on 4th place. Romania defeated Hungary in the quarterfinals, score 37-36, but was defeated by Germany in the semifinals, score 27-22. Germany thus exacted revenge after losing the World Cup final last year. Ukraine defeated Romania in the game counting for the 3rd place, score 39-36. Romania will next take part in the March 25-27 fencing competition in Leipzig, Germany.
