Orange is the mobile phone services’ market leader, as half of the users own at least one SIM card from Orange. 35 pc use mobile phone services from Vodafone, 25 pc from Cosmote, 9 pc from RDS and 1 pc from Zapp. 78 pc of mobile phone users rely on the services of one provider, 18 pc have two providers, and 4 pc resort to three or more providers, according to the results of a poll conducted by Gallup between March and April 2010 for the Communications Regulatory Authority (ANCOM), Hotnews.ro reports. RCS&RDS, one of the major telecom operators in Romania, claimed, a year ago, 9 per cent of the mobile phone local market – that is, over 2.2 million users. RCS&RDS has offered no addition details on the number of mobile phone services-users since December 2009, when the company had 1.35 million users. Data regarding market shares are not computed based on the figures supplied by the communications operators to ANCOM, but on the data collected by Gallup from the respondents.

At the same time, Romtelecom is the main fixed phone services provider on the business segment, as 87 per cent of the companies and institutions use the operator’s services, according to the same poll. RCS&RDS offer fixed phone services to 21 pc of companies and institutions (better represented on the segment of large companies, with over 250 employees – 31 pc). Only 4 pc of the companies use fixed phone services from Vodafone, 3 pc from UPC, 1 pc from Orange and 2 pc from other providers. According to Gallup findings, “82 pc of the households in Romania use mobile phone services, whether it’s subscription-based services or prepaid cards (excluding the services covered in full or in part by the companies or by other institutions).”
