INS: Population keeps declining by 7,124 in January

The population of Romania continued its decline in January 2011, when the number of deaths exceeded that of births by 7,124, thus keeping the downward trend that started in the early ‘90s, data released yesterday by the National Statistics Institute (INS) reveal.


According to INS, 16,325 children were born in January 2011, 198 less than in December 2010, against 23,449 deceased, 53 less than the previous month. The number of babies under 1 year that died in January 2011 stood at 199, 32 more than a year ago.


The number of marriages dropped by 92 in January against December 2010, to 3,753, while divorces diminished by 1,796 against the previous month, to 1,277. There were 1,088 fewer marriages in January against the same month of 2010 and 62 more divorces pronounced through final court decision.
