US millionaire kidnapped by Romanian butler

Emanuel Nicolescu (32), the ex-butler of millionaire Anne Bass (68), from Manhattan, New York, was arrested after a four year-hunt and deferred to justice before a federal court in Bridgeport, ‘Adevarul’ reports. The Romanian is accused of breaking into Anne Bass’s luxury home in Connecticut, on the night of April 15, 2007, with two accomplices. The ex-wife of Texas billionaire Sid Bass and her lover, Julian Lethbridge (62), were sequestered, tied up and beaten by the three masked men for 12 hours, the American press reports, quoted by the above mentioned paper.

The police investigation trailed on for 18 months until someone came up with the idea of checking the list of Anne Bass’s former employees. This led them to Nicolescu – a Romanian citizen who moved to the US in 1993 – who had worked as a butler for the New York millionaire for a couple of months in 2007 and had been fired a short while before the attack.

Nicolescu, who left the US after the incident, returned on January 23, and was arrested on the Chicago airport. Last week, the Romanian appeared before the Bridgeport court, where he pleaded “not guilty”. The identity of his accomplices is yet to be discovered.
