PNL leader: Romanians living abroad should vote only if they pay taxes

PNL leader Crin Antonescu stated in an interview for Italy’s ‘Gazeta Romaneasca’ that he proposes a debate on the idea of a voting system that would force the Romanians living abroad to pay at least one tax in Romania if they want to be able to cast their votes in Romanian elections. “It’s not my final opinion. I realize it’s a controversial subject and that the idea could spark heated discussions. But I believe it’s worth organizing a debate,” he added, nevertheless arguing that one has to take part in administering the state if one wants to take part in taking decisions. “You can’t just decide on how it should be administered without contributing anything,” he said during the interview. Antonescu said that PNL opposes voting by mail out of “fear” that this would only be an election fraud instrument.
