Craiova businessman Dinel Staicu, who is currently sought nationwide to serve a seven-year jail sentence for defrauding the International Bank of Religions (BIR), tried to change his name into Dinel Nutu in January, according to Mediafax. Staicu wanted to take his wife’s last name, Nutu, and although the name change was registered in the Official Gazette, police said the procedures were never carried through. However, the new name has become legal and official as of April 1, when the businessman collected his new ID, the news agency reported later yesterday. Authorities were informed of the change only yesterday, when they demanded infromation from the National Database Management Centre. Staicu was sentenced to seven years in jail for complicity to abuse of position in the BIR bankruptcy case, under a final decision of the Bucharest Court of Appeals on Monday. Police started a nationwide pursue for him the following day and have already raided the properties he owns and the companies he is a shareholder in, to no avail.
In the same case, former BIR manager Ion Popescu was sentenced to seven years for abuse of position, while two former workers got a five-year and four-year term, respectively.
