Roland Berger: 60 pc chances to have 1,000 km of motorway in 2020

The preferred topic of speeches delivered by politicians, reaching 1,000 km of motorway by the year 2020, has only 60 pc chances to succeed, according to Codrut Pascu, managing partner with the consulting firm Roland Berger, which conducted a survey among company managers in Central and Eastern Europe about the development of the region in the coming years. According to the expert, achieving a growth rate of 3-4 pc each year by 2020 is in direct relation with the development of infrastructure. “We need to develop the air transport infrastructure and overhaul the rail transport infrastructure, so we no longer rely on a single system,” Pascu said. In Romania, the average construction rate of motorways over the last 20 years was 10 km/year. At this rate, Romania would have the promised 1,000 km of motorway somewhere around 2080. In the last decade, the Ministry of Transport availed of more than EUR 20 bln, but it was able to build just 200 km of motorway.
