National Liberal Party (PNL) President Crin Antonescu concluded the signing of local protocols setting up the local branches of the Social-Liberal Union (USL), in Bucharest too, stressing no agreements, formal or informal, have been struck on Union candidates. Asked to provide some insight into the Bucharest protocol, which, according to PNL and PSD (Social-Democrat Party) sources was signed Saturday, Antonescu said that the content of the protocols signed throughout the country is no different from the framework document signed when the USL was established. “This signing resulted in local leaders of the component groupings sitting at the same table and making them responsible. The joint candidates, under the constraints of the protocol, will be picked later on, starting from polls, the parity split stipulated. The candidate for general mayor and those for district mayors are yet to be chosen, Mediafax quoted Antonescu as saying.
Also yesterday, the Social-Liberal Union called for the General Council of the Bucharest Municipality to meet in extraordinary session this week towards beginning organisational procedures for a local referendum. In late March, Bucharest General Mayor Sorin Oprescu said that the referendum originated by the PNL and the Conservative Party (PC) on whether district mayoralties should stay in place or not might be held in late May.
