Cigarette prices were hiked, as of the beginning of this week, by an average RON 0.03 per pack, Realitatea.net reports. Producers say that, by the new prices, they are trying to make up for losses caused by higher duty and increased smuggling. According to the latest statistics, smuggled cigarettes account for 27 pc of the total volume of cigarettes sold in Romania. This is the second time, since the beginning of the year, when cigarette-manufacturers hike prices by up to RON 0.03 per pack. Prices will be hiked again, as of July 1, when tobacco duty will be raised again, following the calendar Romania set with the EU. Then, the price of a cigarette pack may rise by RON 0.02 to RON 0.06.
