PSD Bucharest leader, ‘confident’ he can work with Ponta

In an interview to Mediafaxnews agency yesterday, Social-Democrat Bucharest leaderand District 5 Mayor MarianVanghelie spoke about hisplans for the future, his politicalambitions and the relationshipwith current partypresident Victor Ponta. Hiscomments came after Pontasaid earlier this week thatVanghelie and other oppositionleaders in the capitalwould not be a good choicefor City Hall candidate,underlining that the Social-Liberal Union will most probablyback current GeneralMayor Sorin Oprescu foranother term.

“My relationship with Pontawas in stages. We are both veryproud, but I think he wants towin the elections. I don’t thinkhe would work against me inelections only for the sake ofbeing against me. One mustnot necessarily be friends withthe party leader. I am confidentI can work with Ponta,”Vanghelie said.

As for his immediate plans, hesaid he has big ambitions andthat he is ready to enter a newstage of his political career.Vanghelie underlined that heplans to go to the UnitedStates again and voiced interestin ties with the EuropeanUnion and Russia, saying thathe wants to help develop highlevel political and institutionalrelations. “The position ofPSD vice president makes mewant different things. Peopleexpect a vice president to givesomething to society,” headded.
