Education Minister Daniel Funeriu notified the National Integrity Agency (ANI) about the incompatibility status of university rectors who hold leading party positions or public office, according to Mediafax. The minister sent a letter to the ANI leadership on April 12, asking that measures be taken against rectors who are incompatible with their position, because the 60-day deadline for them to opt for either their university post or their public office expired. The requirement is provided in the new Education Law.
Those who have not yet opted for one of the two positions they hold are Nicolae Robu, rector of the Timisoara Polytechnics University, Ecaterina Andronescu, rector of Bucharest’s Polytechnics University, Stefan Dragulescu, rector of the Timisoara Medical School and Florian Popa, rector of the Bucharest Medical School. The four are also lawmakers. Commenting on Funeriu’s request yesterday, Robu said the Education Law does not actually force him to give up one of the positions, since the law on lawmakers’ statute allows MPs to be rectors as well. Robu also told Mediafax that he will not allow himself “intimidated” and that he will ask a court of justice to give a verdict on the incompatibility issue.
