Aerial highway to have underground portions

The aerial highway will pass beneath historical monuments in Bucharest, as well as beneath private properties along its route, to reduce the costs needed for expropriations, the general mayor, Sorin Oprescu, stated, yesterday, quoted by HotNews.ro. Thus, the aerial highway will be partly underground.

“The (e.n. aerial) highway will not cut through central Bucharest. There are entire portions where it will pass beneath the buildings and, where historical monuments stand or too many expropriations would be needed, it will go approximately 30 to 32 metre-deep beneath them,” the mayor explained. The aerial highway, officially dubbed the Capital’s middle ring-expressway, may pass underneath the Herastrau Park.
“There is the option of it going underneath the Herastrau Lake. It would go into a tunnel from the Airport-Nicolae Caramfil area and emerge at the end of Poligrafiei. It would be more difficult, in this scenario, to join other arteries, as it goes through the tunnel. This is just one of the variants, for now. Nothing has been decided, as yet,” the architect Vlad Cavarnali, the owner of Alpha Studio Ltd, one of the companies commissioned to draft the Urban Plan and conduct feasibility studies for this work, stated, for B365.ro.

Another possibility, for this segment, is building an overpass above the Herastrau Park. At the same time, architects do not preclude the variant of building an overpass above the already existing pass in Pipera.
