Romania tops ECHR cases closed in 2010

Quoting the 2010 annual report on rulings by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) announced that Romania ranks tops with respect to the total number of cases closed during 2010, 17 per cent of all the cases closed by the Committee of Ministers.

The MAE outlines that the number of Romanian cases definitely closed last year was down to 9 per cent last year, from 13 per cent in 2009, which means the number of sentences is on the decline. “As to the non-payment of the equitable satisfaction within the deadline set by the Court, we notice Romania being below the overall average, with the report mentioning only 14 instances of payment beyond the 3-month deadline, under 9 per cent of the cases, against a corresponding average percentage rate of 13 per cent, MAE said.
