Domestic steel output, up 10 pc in March

Romania’s steel output increased by 10.1 pc in March to 350,000 tons, from 318,000 tons a year ago, at a much faster pace than the 4 pc advance in European Union and 7 pc worldwide, according to data released by the World Steel Association and quoted by Mediafax. In Q1 this year, Romania’s output rose from 836,000 to 945,000 tons of steel, which ranks the country 14th in terms of volume, both in March and for the first quarter. In Central and Eastern Europe, Romania produced more steel than Bulgaria (79,000 tons), Hungary (136,000 tons) and Greece (180,000 tons), but less than Poland (718,000 tons), Slovakia (399,000 tons) and the Czech Republic (483,000 tons).

Germany retains its place as largest steel producer of the EU, both in March and in Q1, with output increases of 0.1 pc in March and 4.2 pc during the first quarter, to 11.4 million tons. At global scale, the biggest steel producer is China, which posted a 9 pc output increase in March, to 59.4 million tons, and an 8.7 pc increase at three months, to 170 million tons.
