US Ambassador finds ancestor’s death certificate in Botosani

US Ambassador Mark Gitenstein was on a visit to Botosani, the place of origin of his family, yesterday, according to HotNews.ro. While at the Great Synagogue in the town, he was given a copy of the death certificate of his great-great-grandfather. The document was discovered in the Botosani State Archives by a member of the Jewish community there, Gustav Finkel, who decided to study the US ambassador’s genealogy.

According to the certificate, Gitenstein’s ancestor, Sama Bralever, died in 1888. The ambassador said he was very moved to touch the document and felt as if he was touching his great-great-grandfather and his father, who died at the end of last year. After visiting the synagogue, Gitenstein also went to the local Jewish Cemetery. (A.C.)
