SRI Alba chief, detained by prosecutors

Ioan Tarnu, the head of the Alba County Intelligence Office, and Liviu Schiau, police sub-inspector in the Aba-Iulia Anti-Organized Crime Brigade, were detained for 24 hours, on Monday, by the DIICOT prosecutors, charged with assisting an organized crime group specialized in stealing equipment from EU member states. Damages are estimated at EUR 4,500,000. The prosecutors of the Direction for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism – the Hunedoara Territorial Bureau are investigating 24 suspects, currently in preventive arrest. According to DIICOT prosecutors, the lieutenant-colonel Ioan Tarnu had received gifts from the wife of a defendant in the equipment-theft case, assuring her he could persuade the police to conclude their investigation in a manner satisfactory to the defendant.
