President Traian Basescu sent a letter to the Chamber of Deputies’ leadership, saying that he approved the United States’ request to use current facilities at the Mihail Kogalniceanu Airdrome Administrative Centre, the Kogalniceanu Airport and the Constanta Harbour.
According to the letter, the US asked permission to conduct, between May and June 30, testing and validation activities regarding the possibility of transiting material and human resources to and from Afghanistan, in support of the NATO International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), the Enduring Freedom operation of the coalition, the US operation NewDawn in Iraq and other operations.
The concrete conditions for the activities at these facilities will be established by a technical agreement to be signed by the Defence Ministry and representatives of the United States, the letter also says. The president announced last week that the country’s Supreme Defence Council decided to allow US forces to use these military objectives. He added that the Kogalniceanu Airport and the Constanta Harbour will thus become strategic infrastructure for the US as well, not only for Romania.
