Woman dies of infected bedsores

The 67-year-old woman with bedsores whom Health Minister Csecke Attila gave as a justifying example for several “inefficient” medical care units being closed down has died. A victim of both doctors’ carelessness, the old woman had been in a Constanta hospital for the past three years, and the medical reform, the woman has eventually lost her struggle for life. Her case got extensive media coverage during the scandal caused by the shutdown of the 67 so called “black-listed” hospitals, among which that where the woman spent the last three years of her life.

Her case got so much media attention on account of her deplorable condition when transferred from the Baneasa, Health Centre, Constanta County with deep infected bedsores to a psychiatry hospital in Vaslui County,  a 400 km-long ambulance trip, only to be sent back to Constanta right away, which meant a 800-km round trip within a single day. She was admitted to the same medical unit from which she had just been discharged, only to meet her death there. The Constanta County Public Health Department has opened an investigation into the case, whose preliminary results show the woman received poor medical care while in hospital, with doctors accused of dereliction of duty. The Doctors’ College has also been notified about the case, and the Health Ministry also started an inquiry of its own.
