The head of the Gendarme Detachment to Portile de Fier I, Drobeta Turnu Severin, was killed and a colleague of his was injured in a traffic accident on Wednesday night, after the car they were in overturned and fell into a roadside ditch on National Route 56A, Mehedinti County.
A spokesperson for the Mehedinti County Police, Andreea Dobre, told Mediafax that the accident happened because of speeding. The car was being driven by Major Nelu Mituca, the gendarme who was killed in the crash. “Preliminary inquiries showed that the 43-year-old man, who was at the wheel of his personal car, drove too fast and imprudently, lost control of the vehicle and overturned in a water drainage ditch,” Dobre said.
Mituca’s colleague, Major Nicolae Vasile, was immediately taken to the Drobeta Turnu Severin Hospital and is now in stable condition. Mituca, a gendarme since 1994, is survived by his wife and child.
In a separate accident, five people were injured when a minibus registered in the Republic of Moldova crashed head-on into a pole in Suceava County on Wednesday night. A spokesperson for the Suceava County Police, Gabriel Pantiru, said there were nine people in the minibus and four of them sustained no injuries. The five wounded were given medical care at the scene by a team of the local Emergency Situations Inspectorate. Police have begun an investigation to establish the exact causes of the accident.
In Caras Severin meanwhile, two people ended up in hospital in severe condition after getting in the same car with a 23-year-old man without a driver’s licence, who was also under the influence, according to Realitatea.net. Because of speeding, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which skidded off the road and crashed into the wall of a kindergarten. Upon impact, the driver’s wife was taken to hospital in a coma. The other passenger has one of his legs amputated, the TV channel said.
And on National Route 1, near Ploiesti, a truck loaded with furniture overturned because of excessive speeding, according to the police. The truck, which was heading to Constanta, had to be removed from the road by a large-tonnage crane. No victims were reported in the accident.
