A spokesperson for the Mehedinti County Police, Andreea Dobre, told Mediafax that the accident happened because of speeding. The car was being driven by Major Nelu Mituca, the gendarme who was killed in the crash. “Preliminary inquiries showed that the 43-year-old man, who was at the wheel of his personal car, drove too fast and imprudently, lost control of the vehicle and overturned in a water drainage ditch,” Dobre said.

The five wounded were given medical care at the scene by a team of the local Emergency Situations Inspectorate. Police have begun an investigation to establish the exact causes of the accident.

In Caras Severin meanwhile, two people ended up in hospital in severe condition after getting in the same car with a 23-year-old man without a driver’s licence, who was also under the influence, according to Realitatea.net. Because of speeding, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which skidded off the road and crashed into the wall of a kindergarten. Upon impact, the driver’s wife was taken to hospital in a coma. The other passenger has one of his legs amputated, the TV channel said.
