Opposition: PDL proves it is unable to change

Boc’s re-election was criticised by the opposition, which said the ruling party thus proves it is unable to reform and change itself. PSD leader Victor Ponta told a press conference yesterday that PDL remains the only party “which is still led by a former Communist Party activist, who is trying to take Romania back to before 1989.” Ponta added that Saturday’s vote shows that PDL is completely unable to change and only cares for its internal problems and clientele. He also said the opposition will do everything possible to replace Boc as head of government. As for rumours that Boc may be replaced as PM, Ponta said he was willing to wager that Udrea would not be absent from a future possible cabinet. PSD National Council leader Adrian Nastase also said that Basescu “lost the PDL elections by winning them” and that there emerged a “schism” in the ruling party following the election.

In his turn, Liberal leader Crin Antonescu called on all PDL members and other parties in the ruling coalition to “break the circle of illusion, isolation and distance from reality created by Traian Basescu and Emil Boc and their acolytes.” He also launched an appeal to Blaga to place the country’s interests above the party’s.
