Celebrated Czeck film director Jiri Menzel awarded Order of “Cultural Merit”

The Czech film director Jiri Menzel, awarded, yesterday, at the Culture Ministry, the Order of “Cultural Merit” in the rank of Commander, stated, during the ceremony, that this distinction was, for him, an important bridge to Romania, which he considers “a deeply cultural country”. Guests at the ceremony included the presidential advisor Peter Eckstein-Kovacs, who came bearing the decree signed by the president Traian Basescu, as well as the Czech ambassador to Bucharest, Jiri Sitler.

“(…) Romania’s granting a Czech artist such an important distinction goes to show that Romania is a deeply cultural country. I make a special note of saying I appreciate Romanian culture and I will try to get better acquainted with it, because, to my shame, I do not know it that well, but this distinction marks, for me, an important bridge to Romania,” the filmmaker stated. In turn, the Culture Minister, Kelemen Hunor, said that Menzel’s films transcended the historical context and “can be seen, even now, as genuine creations, because they speak of human relations, of things that, again, transcend the social structure and the historical context”. “Menzel’s films abound in irony, sarcasm and references to Czech culture, film and literature,” the minister added, voicing his conviction that “even 20 or 30 years from now, Menzel’s films will maintain their value”.
