BRD – Groupe Societe Generale has launched a contactless debit card under the MasterCard and Maestro aegis that can be used for paying public transportation fares too, Mediafax informs. The card will be usable at first in Bucharest and then in Sibiu and Constanta. The Bucharest public transportation system is the first in which the BRD card can be used. Starting in June, BRD will extend the use of contactless cards to Bucharest’s subway system too, thus generalizing the technical solution that has already been installed in ten stations since December 2010.
BRD’s future development directions will seek to implement new technologies that have appeared at global level. Multifunctional cards will be chargeable with commutation tickets for one or several above-ground public transportation lines or for all public transportation lines. Likewise, people can ask for the e-wallet which allows them to use other lines and in the case of Bucharest the subway or bus lines towards the airports. The contactless card will have other functions characteristic of a standard bank card, such as money-withdrawal and payments.
