Deluge hits Buzau, 1500 stranded

Over 1500 Buzau County residents remained stranded yesterday due to torrential rain, which completely wrecked the only road between two villages. The downpour lasted one hour. The Slanic River swallowed and destroyed 30 metres of the road, leaving 400 households stranded in the villages of Terca and Plostina. “The hailstorm was quite scary. I was so scared I didn’t know where to hide,” Realitatea TV reported a local as saying.

I would travel by car in the morning. Now… I have to walk. The commune is ten kilometres away, but, you got to do what you got to do,” the mailwoman said.

“We don’t have the financial might required to overcome this flash flood. Either the County Council, or Apele Romane (water utility operator> should assist us,” Emil Lefter, mayor of the Lopatari commune, said. Teams with the Inspectorate for Emergency Situations are assessing the damages and trying to find a solution to get the road restored.

Yesterday evening, the meteorologists issued a severe alert for wind storms and torrential rains for Bucharest, Ilfov and Prahova County, including the city of Ploiesti.
