The InterContinental Bucharest Hotel will celebrate 40 years since its inauguration, in May 1971, a press release informs. To mark this anniversary, on May 28 and 29, all the hotel’s guests and clients will benefit from a 40 pc- discount on the prices listed, on accommodation and in the Corso and Modigliani restau- rants, as well as in the Intermezzo bar. A mini-exhibi- tion will be set up in the hotel lobby, including pieces of furni- ture, photos, clippings from the press of the time and quotes from people who took part in the building and the inauguration, as builders or as staff.
The history of the InterContinental Bucharest Hotel started in the ‘60s, when a representative of the company Cyrus Eaton Group came to Bucharest. The latter got the idea of building a hotel in Bucharest, after being forced to spend the night in a hotel lobby, as there weren’t any spare rooms. InterContinental Bucharest was, at the time of its inauguration, and for 25 years afterwards, the tallest building in Romania. For nearly 30 years, the InterContinental Hotel was the only five stars’ hotel in Romania, which operated at international standards. At the same time, the InterContinental was the first hotel in Romania to introduce the “Swedish buffet” breakfast system, as well as the concept of “room service”. Today, the InterContinental Hotel offers 257 renovated rooms and flats, spacious and elegantly furnished, complete with high-speed cable and wireless Internet and a generous working space.
