Raids aimed at cigarette and alcohol smuggles

Several searches were being conducted yesterday in the counties of Buzau, Galati and Harghita. The first target of prosecutors with the Organized Crime and and Terrorism  Investigation Department (DIICOT) were the members of a cigarette and alcohol smuggling ring in the counties of Buzau and Galati. At the 21 houses raided, there were found 400,000 cigarettes and 1,800 litres of pure non-excised alcohol, seized by DIICOT.

Investigators put under restraint three luxury cars owned by ring members. The 23 criminal group members were taken for questioning, and are likely to be put under preventive arrest. Also yesterday, 12 searches were carried out in Harghita Cointy, and 9 people were questioned. They are charged with defrauding several companies of over EUR 800,00 in 2010, According to the DIICOT Brasov spokesperson, ring members acquired large quantities of merchandise (home goods, sports equipment), without paying for it.
