Romania’s steel production rose by 2.3 pc in April, from 332,000 last year, to 340,000 tonnes this year, while the EU reported a 2.2 pc-rise, from 15.4 M tonnes to 15.8 M tonnes, according to the World Steel Association, quoted by Mediafax. The global steel output rose by 5 pc, from 120.9 M tonnes to 126.9 M tonnes. China, which accounts for nearly half of the volume of steel delivered on the global market, reported a 7.1 pc-rise in April, to 59 M tonnes. Japan reported a 6.3 pc-slump, at 8.4 M tonnes. Germany, the largest producer in the EU, reported a 1.7 pc-slump, at 3.8 tonnes. In the first four months of 2011, Romania produced 1.3 M tonnes of steel, rising by 11.3 pc, compared to 1.17 M tonnes in January to March 2010. The EU reported a 5.7 pc-rise in the first four months, from 58.1 M tonnes last year to 61.4 M tonnes.
