Federer and Nadal into the 3rd round

Roger Federer ran off 13 straight games to beat French wild card Maxime Teixeira 6-3, 6-0, 6-2 Wednesday in the second round of the French Open, according to sports.yahoo.com.

The 2009 champion at Roland Garros was broken once early in the first set. But after Teixeira held serve to make it 3-3, Federer dominated and didn’t lose another game until the Frenchman made it 4-1 in the third.

“It’s so difficult to come out and play on a big court when you are not used to it,” Federer said of his 22-year-old opponent. “I’m playing here for the 12th year and I’m very experienced.”

Federer was playing against a man who had won his first tour-level match in the first round, when he beat another French wild card. But Teixeira never really had a chance against the 16-time Grand Slam champion.

“I gave it all. I did what I could,” Teixeira said. “To play against Roger is an incredible experience. I’ll never forget it and it will be great memories.”

Federer will next face 29th-seeded Janko Tipsarevic, who beat Pere Riba of Spain 6-1, 6-3, 6-0. Tipsarevic took Federer to five sets in the third round of the 2008 Australian Open, eventually losing 10-8.

American John Isner was one step of a big surprise on Tuesday when he rose to the first-round challenge of having to play Rafael Nadal, and pushed the world’s No. 1 to a five-set marathon that was the best match from Roland Garros so far.

Coming on just the third day of play, the contest lasted just over 4 hours and provided the crowd in Court Philippe Chatrier with an unexpected thriller. Nadal won the first set 6-4, then lost the next two, 7-6(2), 7-6(2). In the fourth, Nadal began to wear down Isner, taking the unseeded and 39th-ranked Isner 6-2.

Isner tried to battle back in the final set, but lost a key break and went down 6-4. It was the first five-set match ever at Roland Garros for Nadal, and at times he looked stunned to be in one. The strong serve of Isner pushed Nadal well back of the serve line and forced Rafa to defend out of his comfort zone.
