‘Asphalt kings’ take a step back

The four contractors of the Moara Vlasiei-Ploiesti motorway segment, Spedition UMB, Tehnostrade (both companies controlled by Dorinel Umbrarescu), Euroconstruct Trading ‘98 (Dan Besciu) and PA&CO International (Costel Casuneanu) abandoned their intention to charge an extra 47 pc, equivalent to more than EUR 110 M for their services, Ziarul Financiar reports.

This is the first time when the Transport Ministry takes a firm stance in such an important contract and convinces contractors to do their job without additional clauses, the newspaper says. The initial contract amounted to EUR 199 M, but the Romanian National Company of Motorways and National Roads (CNADNR) and the four construction companies signed in September 2009 an additional act that raises the price tag of the Moara Vlasiei-Ploiesti motorway by 25 pc, to RON 883.7 M (EUR 242 M). CNADNR paid to contractors nearly RON 671 M so far, accounting for 75 pc of the total cost.
