Football: Steaua wins Romanian Cup

After having a poor season marred by numerous rows and embarrassing games, Steaua played unexpectedly well on Wednesday evening and defeated its eternal rival Dinamo, score 2-1, thus managing to win the Romanian Cup after 5 consecutive years in which it won no trophies.

Nicolae Dica put Steaua ahead in the 24th minute with a brilliant 16-meter free kick that caught Dinamo goalkeeper Belgradean on a wrong footing. Several minutes later Steaua wasted an opportunity to double its lead, Bilasco being unable to push the ball in from 8 meters inside the box. Dinamo took advantage of that in the 33rd minute when Torje scored from a free kick, Steaua goalkeeper Tatarusanu having his share of the blame.

After the break Dinamo suffered the shock of an own-goal. In the 51st minute Barboianu tried to clear the ball away from Surdu but ended up finding his own net. Steaua’s fans reacted by unleashing chaos, lighting dozens of torches and throwing some of them on the pitch. The game was subsequently stopped for a few moments. Dinamo’s fans responded in kind, causing a horrific scene in the 59th minute when a torch landed just two meters away from Dinamo’s Gabriel Torje while he was just entering Steaua’s box.

Interim Steaua head coach Cosmin Olaroiu announced that he will leave the team, pointing out that he has already signed a contract with “a team in the Gulf.”
