Roger Federer reached a record 28th successive Grand Slam quarter-final on Sunday when he defeated Swiss compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 in the French Open last 16, according to sports.yahoo.com. Third seed Federer, the 2009 champion, will face either Spain’s David Ferrer or Gael Monfils of France for a place in the semi-finals.
“I am super-happy because I knew after he beat (Jo-Wilfried) Tsonga, when he really dominated in the last two sets, what the danger was,” said Federer. “He showed all his qualities in the third set and was a bit unlucky but all the better for me I guess.”
World No. 2 Novak Djokovic has improved to 40-0 this year after he completed a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Juan Martin del Potro on Saturday at Roland Garros. Djokovic’s overall winning streak dating back to the Davis Cup final in December is now 42 matches, tied-third (with John McEnroe) in the all-time list. He has won seven titles this season.
On Sunday afternoon Djokovic played against Richard Gasquet for a place in the last eight. The match ended after the closing of this edition.
China’s Na Li (top seed 7) defeated Romania’s Sorana Carstea at the Roland Garros, score 6-2, 6-2. The game counting for round three was dominated by the Chinese player from one end to the other. The defeat leaves Romania with no representatives in the tournament.
