Senate bans smoking in enclosed public areas

The Senate passed yesterday, with 58 votes to 29, and 15 abstentions, a draft law that bans smoking in all enclosed public areas: local and central public institutions, economic institutions, tourist, education, health and cultural units, mass transit vehicles, railway stations, airports – under both state and private control. At work, smoking is allowed in specially arranged spaces, which do not serve as transit areas and are equipped with fire extinguishers, ashtrays, ventilation systems. The initiative belongs to PSD deputy Manuela Mitrea. Senators also adopted an amendment that allows smoking in bars, discos, restaurants and other places with similar destination, exclusively organised for smokers, with a surface under 100 square meters. The draft law will be sent for debates to the Chamber of Deputies, which has the final say.
