Liviu Dragnea, PSD Secretary General and President of the Teleorman County Council, stated during a press conference on Thursday that the County Council did not violate the conflict of interest stipulations when procuring two public works and that a campaign is being waged against him after the European Commission announced two weeks ago that it will stop paying for a part of the projects included in the Regional Operational Programme. The project that concerns Dragnea was among them. According to Mediafax, PSD’s Secretary General stated that Catalin Vatafu, head of the Authority for the Control of Structural Instruments, an authority subordinated to the Prime Minister, is behind the action to influence the EC’s audit. Moreover, Dragnea pointed out that the government has “a second Botis case” since Maria Vatafu, Catalin Vatafu’s mother, finds herself “in a serious conflict of interest” by being shareholder and administrator of the SANVA Construct SRL Company that signed a financing contract for EUR 1.2 M from European funds in May. Dragnea stated that he does not rule out the possibility that other high-ranking government officials may be behind the action that targets him, however he did not name any names.
