The Ministry of Regional Development and Tourism (MDRT) and the Bucharest Mayor’s Office will collaborate on unblocking works on the Buzesti-Berzei expressway, meant to facilitate traffic between Northern and Southern Bucharest, and wish to develop a partnership to pursue several projects in Bucharest. “We are aware of the importance of works on the Berzei-Buzesti expressway. We discussed with the general mayor the need to resume these works, of course, in keeping with the legal provisions. There was a court decision which forced us to halt works and which we put in practice, via the State Inspectorate for Constructions. We agreed to enhance safety conditions for these works,” the minister of Regional Development and Tourism, Elena Udrea, stated, yesterday, after a meeting with the mayor of Bucharest, Sorin Oprescu. She added that, in order to complete the landscaping plan for the area, which is currently debated at MDRT, she agreed with Sorin Oprescu that several meetings should take place between representatives of the City Hall’s and the ministry’s technical apparatus, until all problems are solved and all permits are obtained, so the ministry can issue its final stamp of approval on the project.
In turn, Sorin Oprescu argued that, at some point, in the case of the Buzesti-Berzei expressway, the court decision went too far, “insofar as they had halted works and not even conservation or consolidation works could be completed”. “There are areas 800 metre- to 1 km-long where no fire-fighters’ or ambulance cars can get it,” he added.
The scandal surrounding the projected Uranus Boulevard has been going on for some months now, involving several NGOs and the Bucharest Mayor’s Office, as the “Salvati Bucurestiul” Association accused the general mayor of continuing works on the North-South expressway even after the State Inspectorate for Constructions had suspended them, on May 11, 2011. It is worth mentioning that the Bucharest Court declared illegal the Bucharest City Council’s Resolution, by which the North-South Expressway project was declared a public utility project.
