‘Romania libera’ journalist buys Academia Catavencu brand

Claudiu Padurean, a journalist with daily ‘Romania libera,’ bought the Academia Catavencu brand for EUR 882,659 VAT included, in a public tender held yesterday. Besides buying the brand, the new owner also earned ownership of the publication’s website name, catavencu.ro. Padurean and Mediafax Group general director Orlando Nicoara were the only ones to take part in the second public tender organised by Catavencu SA company’s judiciary liquidator General Group Expert SRL, putting the Academia Catavencu brand for auction.

According to various press reports, Padurean is in fact a front for Dan Adamescu, the person who controls and runs daily ‘Romania libera’ together with his family. The Academia Catavencu brand was auctioned for a starting price of EUR 149,322 (without VAT). The winner of the auction must pay EUR 882,659 in five working days since the tender in order to complete transfer of ownership over the brand. The auction was resumed after Doru Buscu, editorial manager of Academia Catavencu satirical weekly, who had purchased the brand for EUR 1,617,000 at the first tender on May 26, failed to pay the amount. In May, the Bucharest City Court accepted General Group Expert’s proposal to start bankruptcy procedures for Catavencu SA, editor of weekly magazine Academia Catavencu.
