Mehedinti firefighters were fighting a massive fire for over 20 hours yesterday, after the blaze broke out in the Iron Gates I National Park on Monday. The fire broke out at around 4:30 p.m. on Monday close to Eibenthal and spread quickly towards Tisovita, close to the Danube, because of the strong wind. The Drobeta Turnu Severin Fire Brigade had three officers and 26 non-commissioned officers on site yesterday, along with four employees of the local Forest Administration and ten volunteers. The fire had spread on ten hectares. Because of the rough terrain, firefighters had to fight the blaze using brooms, shovels and bottles of water that had to be carried from fire trucks parked a few kilometers away. The Iron Gates National Park is a protected area.
