A gendarme of Suceava, a policeman of Siret and a local counselor of Gramasti are being probed, along with 164 more people involved in a case of contraband with cigarettes brought from Moldova and Ukraine to Romania. Investigators searched Thursday 143 locations in Suceava, Bucharest, Constanta and Botosani, Mediafax reports. Prosecutors from the Suceava Territorial Bureau of the Department for the Investigation of Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) made 125 searches in Suceava, 12 in Bucharest, 4 in Constanta and two in Botosani, in view of dismantling a transnational group of Romanian and Ukrainian citizens, specialised in the smuggling of cigarettes. According to DIICOT sources, the criminal group also included a gendarme of the Suceava County Inspectorate of Gendarmerie, a policeman of the Siret Local Police and a local counselor of Gramesti commune, who helped the criminals smuggle the cigarettes through the border.
A total 180 people were expected to be brought at the Suceava Territorial Service, for questioning.
