PSD lawmaker defects, joins ruling coalition party

Olt Deputy Doru Frunzulica quit the opposition Social Democrat Party and joined the National Union for Romania Progress (UNPR), which is part of the ruling coalition. The announcement was made by the UNPR in a release quoted by Mediafax.

Frunzulica, at his first term as lawmaker, is a member of the Chamber of Deputies’ defence committee and a member of a joint Chamber of Deputies-Senate commission in charge of developing a package of laws for national security. Frunzulica was also a diplomat with the Foreign Affairs Ministry between 1990 and 1996 and served as state secretary in the Labour Ministry in 2004-2005.

In the release, UNPR said it currently has 28 lawmakers (12 senators and 16 deputies). The party was set up by a group of independent lawmakers, most of them defectors from the opposition Social Democrats and Liberals.
