President Basescu announced that he had promulgated, yesterday, the Law regarding the election of mayors in one round. “Today (e.n. yesterday) I also promulgated the law for the election of mayors in one round. I can tell you there were some question marks about it,” Basescu stated. He further argued that all parties had called for the promulgation of the law.
“In the end it’s their problem. Even the Social Liberal Union (USL), yesterday (e.n. Tuesday), in their letter, beyond the amusing proposal of having early elections, ludicrous, indeed, one of their requests was organizing local elections based on the new law,” the head of state argued. The law for the election of mayors in one round was adopted, in late May, by the Chamber of Deputies, the deciding body, with 174 votes “in favour”, 110 votes “against” and three blank votes.
Under the provisions of the new law, mayors will be elected in one round, except for cases where there is a tie. The bill was adopted by the Chamber after the Senate rejected it.
Several representatives of the political parties, including the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL), as well as a series of NGOs, urged the head of state not to promulgate the law.
