The PDL-UDMR-UNPR coalition suffered a new defeat in the Senate, where the Opposition was able to tighten ranks and impose its favourite as representative of the civil society to the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM). The Senate yesterday validated Camelia Georgiana Iorgulescu for this position with CSM, with 59 votes to 50, and three abstentions.
Only 49 senators voted in favour of PDL candidate Ovidiu Horia Maican, while 55 voted against him and 8 abstained from voting. Georgiana Camelia Iorgulescu, also supported by the Romanian Association of Magistracy, the Pro Democratia Association and the center for Juridical Resources, mustered 59 votes from PSD and PNL, while the Power could only find 50 senators to reject her.
Before the vote, the leader of PNL group in the Senate, Puiu Hasotti urged his colleagues to be reasonable when they cast their ballots and warned that one of the candidates “is the acolyte” of Monica Macovei, “who caused much prejudice to Romanian Justice.” “Be warned that Ms. Macovei and, probably, her acolyte too, see us all as criminals, only because we are members of the Parliament,” Hasotti warned, referring to Ovidiu Horia Maican, quoted by Realitatea.net.
