Handball: Oltchim in tough CL group

In the men’s competition, HCM Constanta will meet Hamburg, Cimos Koper, St. Petersburg and Oreln Wisla.

Women’s handball club Oltchim Ramnicu Valcea will play in Champions League’s Group D where it will meet Spain’s Itxako Reyno de Navarra (European runner-up), Russia’s Dinamo Volgograd and a team that will come from the qualifiers, the competition’s official website informs, Hotnews informs.

“We’ll see. We have to get out of the group. Reaching the final remains our goal. We have to prove our worth. We can say that the game against Itxako will be payback too. Oana Chirila, who formerly played for Itxako, will help us too, but let’s be honest: irrespective of our opponents’ names, we still have to get out of the group,” Oltchim head coach Radu Voina stated. Oltchim played two games against Itxako in the Champions League season that recently ended, losing both of them: 25-26 in Spain and 22-25 in Valcea.

If it wins the 2nd preliminary round’s Group 1, U Jolidon Cluj will play in Group B alongside title holder Larvik (Norway), Slovenia’s Krim Ljubljana and Croatia’s Podravka Koprivnica.

In the men’s competition, HCM Constanta will play in Group C. Its tough opponents are: Germany’s Hamburg, Slovenia’s RK Cimos Koper, Russia’s St. Petersburg, Poland’s Orlen Wisla Plock and a team that will come from the qualifiers.  The teams that finish on the top for places in each of the six groups will qualify for the last-16 stage. From then on the games will be eliminatory.
