Senate leadership postpones debates on amending the Constitution

The members of the Permanent Bureau of the Senate were unable to decide by vote whether the draft amending of the Constitution, proposed by President Traian Basescu, will be discussed in parallel with debates in the Chamber of Deputies. Senate vice-president Ioan Chelaru made the announcement at the conclusion of a meeting in which the Permanent Bureau had to decide whether the two Houses of the Parliament should hold their debates on the draft amendment in parallel or successively. The leadership of the Chamber of Deputies decided Monday that the draft revision of the Constitution will be put on debate by the Law Committee starting September 1st and must be adopted within 60 days.
