OTE Group, Romanian officials to discuss new telecom operator

Officials of Greece’s OTE Group will meet today in order to discuss the future of Romtelecom and Cosmote companies. The new telecom operator will be a giant with a turnover of EUR 1.2 bln and 11.34 million clients and will offer IT services, online stores and its own TV stations, ‘Ziarul Financiar’ informs.

The talks will take place during Romtelecom’s Administrative Board meeting. Romanian state officials and OTE officials have pointed out in recent months to the possibility of merging operations, however until now none of the parties has put forward a concrete timetable or a report on the gains such an operation would bring. The first step in the merging process could be the appointment of a joint CEO for Romtelecom and Cosmote. Merging the operations of Romtelecom, Cosmote, Zapp and Germanos would create a giant operator that will be the biggest player on the market from the point of view of revenues and the number of clients, outranking Orange, Vodafone and RCS&RDS.
