H.E. MARK H. GITENSTEIN, United States Ambassador to Romania:
“For Americans, Independence Day is a special day of celebration – one that unites not only families and friends but also our country. We celebrate our shared belief that governments should advance the interests of all citizens; that dialogue and open debate can only strengthen the fabric of our nation. We know that respect for these beliefs has empowered our country. And we know that the freedoms heralded by America’s young democracy more than two centuries ago are as vital to others today as they are to our citizens.
On this Fourth of July, the United States of America is honored to work side-by-side with Romania in the forum of nations committed to promoting and strengthening democracy worldwide. Romanian help and commitment has also been crucial in our efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq. We also count on Romania as a reliable and outspoken ally for democracy in other international fora, such as the UN Security Council, the OSCE and NATO.
We are also proud of Romania’s efforts to develop its market economy. We know that attention to the rule of law will empower this country’s development and forge even stronger relations between our peoples.
Relations between our countries are closer than ever, and I am confident that an even stronger partnership is on the horizon based on the values that we celebrate today. May the spirit of Independence Day unite our peoples this day and always.”
