Predoiu: The Schengen issue not up to Justice Ministry

Justice Minister Catalin Predoiu said Friday that Romania’s accession to the Schengen area is an issue outside the jurisdiction of the Justice Ministry and difficulties linked to accession to Schengen have been rooted “in political objections”, according to Mediafax. “The difficulties related to Schengen have been due to political objections from some member states, grounded in their view of a lack of progress in cracking down on corruption. This reason has nonetheless been toned down in the latest discussion with member states. What we deal with now is political negotiations actually.

However, the issue is up to other ministries,” Predoiu said, who added that his ministry is trying to “move forward” as far as the cooperation and verification mechanism is concerned.
