The conflict between Liberal leader Crin Antonescu and businessman Dinu Patriciu is entering a new stage, with Patriciu planning to set up an opposition group against the current party president, daily ‘Evenimentul Zilei’ reported. The group would include all Liberal leaders marginalized by Antonescu after his election at the helm of the party. According to PNL sources, Patriciu wants former Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu to head this group. In a recent interview, President Traian Basescu said he had not yet “made up” with Patriciu, but added that despite differences of opinion, the businessman remains a true Liberal. Commenting on the ‘Evenimentul Zilei’ report, Social-Democrat leader Victor Ponta, whose party is in a wide-scale opposition alliance with the PNL, said both he and Antonescu plan to carry through their term as party leaders. “(Basescu) should have no worries. Both Crin Antonescu and myself will carry out our terms, we will win the elections, we will remain heads of our parties, regardless of whether Basescu likes us or not,” Ponta said.
