Three Romanians killed in traffic accident in Austria

Five others were severely injured.

Three Romanians were killed and five others were severely injured in a traffic accident on highway A1, near Asten, in the north of Austria, on Saturday morning, according to Mediafax. The accident happened at around 0400 GMT (7 am Romania time), when a minibus with Romanian licence plates, with eight people on board, was heading for Vienna. For reasons that are yet unknown, the driver lost control of the wheel and crashed into a concrete pole, according to a fire-fighting squad official, Helmut Gumpesberger.

The five injured Romanians were admitted to two hospitals in Linz and Wels, the Foreign Ministry said, underlining that Romania’s embassy in Vienna is in permanent contact with local authorities and the affected Romanian nationals to grant them consular assistance.

Yesterday meanwhile, two severe accidents occurred in the capital. In the first, a driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree on Kiseleff Boulevard. The driver and passenger were injured and taken to hospital. Police are investigating the case to establish the causes of the accident, according to Realitatea.net. In the second accident, a person was severely injured and two others sustained minor injuries when a car entering Iuliu Maniu Boulevard from an adjacent street failed to give way to another vehicle and crashed into it.

A severe accident was reported in Arges County on Saturday. A child died and two other people were injured, including another 13-year-old. The three people were hit by a van while they were sitting on a bench. The driver apparently fell asleep at the wheel and lost control of the vehicle, police said.

And in Ilfov, a driver died after crashing into a large vehicle which he failed to give way to. Witnesses said the large vehicle driver was not able to avoid the collision. In Iasi on Saturday morning, an ambulance coming from Neamt County, transporting an elderly woman to an Iasi hospital, was hit by a taxi. In the accident, the ambulance driver as injured and hospitalised, according to Mediafax. Police are looking into the causes of the accident.
