The number of tourists that checked to Romania’s accommodation facilities during the first five months of the year rose by 9.9 pc against the similar interval of 2010, to 2.14 million, with one in four tourists coming from abroad, according to data released Monday by the National Statistics Institute (INS). Hotel incomings accounted for 77.8 pc of the total arrivals at tourist accommodation facilities, up 11.6 pc from January-May 2010. The number of overnight stays in tourist units increased to 4.66 million, 4.7 pc more than a year ago, with 78.2 pc being stays by Romanian tourists and the difference of 21.8 pc by foreigners. The net occupancy rate of bed places during January-May 2011 was 20.7 pc throughout tourist accommodation facilities, up 0.5 percent points year-on-year. In the case of hotels, the rate was 24.7 pc. Most foreign visitors came from countries located in Europe (94.6 pc). European Union citizens represented 59.9 pc of the total arrivals of foreign visitors to Romania.
