Austria reaffirms Schengen accession support

Foreign Minister Teodor Baconschi met, on Monday, in Vienna, the Austrian Deputy Federal Chancellor and Foreign Minister, Michael Spindelegger, who reaffirmed his country’s steady support for Romania’s Schengen accession.

According to a release by the Foreign Ministry, FM Baconschi’s meeting with his Austrian counterpart was occasioned by the participation in the international conference “The EU Strategy for the Danube Region – New Impulses for Austria”.
“The two ministers addressed topics of mutual interest from the bilateral agenda, with a focus on political and economic cooperation. In the context, the excellent progress of economic cooperation was underlined. The two parties reiterated their interest in encouraging cooperation in fields such as energy, the environment, agriculture and tourism,” the release reads.

As regards the EU Strategy for the Danube Region, the two ministers welcomed the European Council’s resolution of June 24 to adopt this macro-regional cooperation project and discussed the next steps needed to maintain the European political commitment and to ensure as many projects as possible are implemented, at local community level.
